There were initially some concerns that comments might be overly critical, negative or simply unfair. This has not turned out to be the case. There are negative comments, but they are almost always in the context of a balanced opinion. It is quite usual, for example, for students to criticize the workload of a course as being very heavy but to add in the same breath that, providing the load can be handled, it is an exciting and worthwhile course. Indeed, the overall tenor of the comments is usually positive while realistic about the challenges that the courses represent.

Do Students’ Course Reviews Work?

Like other course choice resources, it is difficult to evaluate students’ reviews for effectiveness. There are some indications of popularity—shortly after the site was set up, it was attracting some 300,000 hits a year. Feedback on the site itself was positive, with examples such as:
